Shoulder Pain Relief

The shoulder is a complex joint made up of the humerus (arm bone), the scapula (shoulder blade), and the clavicle (collar bone). There are many muscles and ligaments that support the shoulder and help it move. Shoulder pain can be caused by repetitive overhead activities, falling, straining to reach for something, lifting something heavy, or improper exercise techniques. Other times, shoulder pain can occur for no apparent reason.

Frozen Shoulder AKA Adhesive Capsulitis

Frozen shoulder typically presents as extreme stiffness in the shoulder accompanied by pain with all movements. Pain is also noted with pressure, such as when lying on one side to sleep.

Many times, patients are unable to report any particular incident or cause of injury. During a thorough interview, it is often realized that the patient may have suffered a minor shoulder injury that healsed with an overproduction of scar tissue that severely reduces shoulder mobility. This excessive scar tissue reduces flexibility in the shoulder and makes it more prone to injury.

The main symptom is not being able to move the shoulder in any direction without pain. Physical Therapy is an effective treatment to aid in regaining flexibility, strength, and reducing pain.

Shoulder Bursitis & Tendonits

Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa. This small sac acts as a cushion between moving structures (bones, muscles, tendons or skin). If a muscle or tendon is pulling around a corner of a bone, or over a bone, a healthy bursa protects it from fraying and stress. When a bursa is inflamed, it becomes very painful, even during rest.

• The small sac that provides various joints are called bursa. When Tendinitis can occur in any joint, and very commonly occurs in the shoulder.

• When tendons (bands of tissue that connect muscle to bone to aide in movement) become inflammed, the result is called tendinits.

• This typically occurs following repeated injury or overuse of a joint, resulting in pain and loss of mobility.
